Mistreating is what we call possible activities happening after strip-searching aimed mainly for allowing Citizens for gaining information and attacking other factions. Only people who have been just strip-searched can be chosen for mistreating.

Types of mistreating

Currently mistreating comes in two flavors:

  • Hanging: Hanged person dies immediately after the decision of hanging.
  • Interrogation: Interrogated person's character gets known next morning unless Investigator dies by then.

Obviously it's better to be interrogated than to be hanged in most cases.

Possibilities of mistreating

Council isn't always allowed to perform any known mistreat on one of the strip-searched players. However, the ways in which it is limited vary, depending on initial set of characters (and so, indirectly, on number of players).

If Investigator and Executor were included in initial set of characters, players may be interrogated as long as Investigator is alive and hanged as long as Executor is alive. This basically means that council's possibilities are going to decrease during game, even to the point of no possibility of mistreating at all.

If these characters were not in the game at all, council is never allowed to interrogate, but always allowed to hang.

Self-mistreating prevention

Self-mistreating is basically what happens if council asks the mistreater to mistreat themselves (and so does not happen in the second case). Some rulesets have included the following rules used to prevent this:

  • If Executor is ordered to hang himself, their character just gets known. Known Executor can't get executed.
  • If Investigator is asked to interrogate himself, they are allowed, but not obliged, to make their character known and select one of other strip-searched to get interrogated.

Voting

If mistreating is possible, voting for mistreating always opens with a vote for or against mistreating at all, with tie leading to no mistreating unless priority voter breaks this.
Then council decides who will be mistreated and how (if there is choice), however order of these questions is varies in different rulesets. Tie on subject leads to lack of mistreating at all, tie on method leads to interrogation. Again these ties are void if a priority voter exists. Mannitou may decide to not allow for mistreating that does nothing from viewpoint of mechanics, i.e. interrogating someone with a known character.
In all those votings, abstaining is forbidden - players must vote on one of the options.
